FC THROWBACK – MODIFIED VW LUPO GTI

Posted by Glenn Rowswell on 14th November 2019

Welcome to this week’s FC Throwback, where we take a look back at some of our favourite previous feature cars. This week it’s Kat Giles’ VW Lupo GTi from back in 2013…

By right Royal appointment, you are cordially invited to an audience with Kat Giles and her majestically dumped dub!

Serial Dubber Kat from Surrey is no stranger to the VW scene. In fact when she’s not strutting around in her short shorts, she’s usually found getting mucky under the bonnet of her Lupo. “My Dad was a European racing champion for years, I was brought up around cars and he kinda turned me into a petrol head,”

Kat tells us. After popping her modding cherry with a relatively subtle Mk2 SEAT Arosa, Kat wanted to move onto something with a bit more grunt!

With the SEAT sold and a purse full of money, it was time for Kat to get a new toy. Originally she was dead against Volkswagen’s little Lupo but, after a bit of gentle persuasion from her other half Steve, she started to see sense! The couple spotted a GTI model way up in the Scottish mountains, so booked a flight and took a trip to see it.

The car was far from perfect, but that just made Kat even more determined to add her own touches to it. After a long eight hour drive back to leafy Surrey, the car was finally on home turf and ready for Kat to get stuck in.

No self-respecting Dubber would be seen dead in a car running at standard height, so the Lupo was dropped on a set of JOM coilovers. Women can never have too many pairs of shoes and Kat treats her little ‘loop’ in much the same way. The Schmidt rims were only fitted 24 hours before the shoot and rather than going for the usual polished or painted finish, Kat’s dressed hers in black flock and wrapped them in Falken rubber, mental!

With the car sitting perfectly, she turned her attention to the tired silver bodywork. Kat’s not afraid to break a few nails in her quest for perfection, and it shows! She’s fully smoothed her front bumper to give it a clean, uncluttered finish, and the rear bumper and boot lid have been smoothed. Rather than opting for a re-spray Kat had the car wrapped in grey vinyl, but not before she spent hours painstakingly prepping the bodywork!

“Me and my best friend Rooth sat for hours sorting out the lacquer peel and bad bodywork,” Kat recalls. A week later and the keys were handed over to her mate TJ from Dsign Vinyl. The car was pulled into the workshop and stripped, ready for TJ to lay down he grey wrap.

The mods didn’t end there though. The Lupo’s interior has been treated with just as much care and attention. Both front and rear seats have been trimmed with custom quilted black leather. Sorting out all her favourite tunage is a simple Kenwood headunit and speaker setup.

The majority of what you see before you has been down to Kat’s own fair hands, and it’s for this reason that we ask her to take a bow and officially crown her the Queen of the Scene!
