Tokyo Auto Salon never fails to deliver as Subaru unveils its 1073bhp STI E-RA track car, which takes aim at a 6min 40sec lap around the Nurburgring.

Looks like something straight out of Le Mans, right? Or Gran Turismo, take your pick. Subaru, the name that was famous for producing some of the most iconic JDM machinery, burbling four-pot boxer engines, anti-lag, and going toe-to-toe with Mitsubishi’s Evo is back in a performance sense to showcase what it can do with an electric powertrain driving all four wheels.

Subaru STI E-RA

Say hello to the Subaru STI E-RA, a track-only concept that utilises four motors, one attached to each wheel, that helps it develop a combined output of 1073bhp. The motors, which are supplied by Yamaha, are said to be instantly tuneable thanks to an advanced torque vectoring system.

More exciting, though, is that this car could also represent Subaru’s return to motorsport, with the STI E-RA built to FIA regulations for its new upcoming E-GT race series, which is set to get underway in 2023. This car also forms part of Subaru’s Challenge Project, which has the aim of using motorsport-derived technology to better understand it and implement its uses into its road cars, helping to combat global warming.

As part of the on-track development, Subaru is expected to take the STI E-RA to the Nurburgring where it will attempt to achieve a 6min 40 sec lap time.

Sadly there aren’t any more details about the Subaru STI E-RA’s tech specs but we’ll update this page as and when we know more.
