Ken Block’s Gymkhana GRiD set for epic Grand Final at Santa Pod
After four packed rounds of tyre slaying, clutch-kicking mayhem across Europe, The Grand Final of Gymkhana GRiD is set to play out at Santa Pod on Sunday 28th October. Eight of the world’s greatest drivers are now primed to take on the ultimate challenge and pit their skills against the grand masters of car control; Ken Block and Vaughn Gittin Jr. Made famous by YouTube sensation Ken Block, Gymkhana requires each driver to pilot their car with millimetric accuracy around a pre-marked course against the clock.
Having already wowed the crowds in France at the International Motor Exhibition, where Franck Lagalice triumphed in his 450bhp M5 and Fabrice Morel drove his Mitsubishi Evolution 8 brilliantly to take top RWD and 4WD honours respectively, the competition moved on to Silverstone where Luke Woodham left a grid ranging from Skylines to Volvos floundering in his wake to climb the top step. Dmitry Sribnyj smoked up all four corners of his Subaru Impreza WRX to take the spoils in the AWD class.
Gymkhana GRiD then hit up Sport1’s ‘Track Day’ show at the world famous Oschersleben race circuit in Germany. A devastating pack of euro-drifters turned out for round three; however they were no match for Team Falken’s Remmo Niezen. The Dutch ace decimated the competition in his 5.0litre V8 BMW E30, putting in some of the fastest lap times of the whole competition. UK drifters Jake Archer and RJ Price represented in a super clean pair of Subaru’s in the AWD category.
The fourth and final qualifier was at the ‘AutoMaxx Super Sunday’ show, hosted at the legendary Zandvoort circuit in Holland. Not content by being beaten by his team mate in Germany, Team Falken’s Lars Verbraeken returned and was out for revenge on home turf. With steel nerves and a lead foot, Lars edged out the competition in his howling and fire spitting E30 BMW, setting the stage for an awesome battle against Vaughn and his team mate in October.
But, it all comes down to the Final at Santa Pod Raceway. Each of these drivers has effectively qualified in their territory for the chance to battle it out and prove just who is the best driver in Europe and go head to head in the final, trying to scalp each other’s time. Block will take on the fastest AWD winners in his legendary Ford Fiesta while facing off against the RWD qualifiers will be none other than Vaughn Gittin Jr in his asphalt meltingly-powerful Ford Mustang.
Watch out also for wildcard entries to the action from savagely talented drivers like Monster Energy athlete and X-Games gold medallist Liam Doran, as well as more insane drift demos from Buttsy Butler and Team Japspeed.
Tyres will be slain, clutches will suffer, but Gymkhana GRID glory lasts forever. Catch all the action at ‘The Pod’ on the 28th ..
