Glenn’s Audi A6 Quattro Avant – Part 25

It’s time to crank up the JL Audio to 11, as the I pick up the wagon from SJ Concepts…

If you saw the last issue, you’ll already know that I recently dropped the Avant off to audio gurus SJ Concepts with a boot load of JL Audio. The original plan was to get the car in and out in a few days. But unfortunately it took a bit longer than expected as my air ride had other ideas.

I had suspected my compressor was on the way out, and clearly it was, as it decided to go kaput whilst slammed on the floor at SJ’s workshop. Bugger. Sorry guys! Luckily the guys at Car Audio Security came to my rescue with a twin compressor kit (the other will be fitted at a later date), meaning SJ could replace the compressor and continue finishing my install. Phew!

As I’ve said, the plan is to have a stealth build, as the A6 is my daily and I need the boot space for manly things, like going to the tip and, errr, shopping. This presents its own challenges to an installer, especially when you have an air ride kit taking up space as well.

But despite the challenges, SJ delivered exactly what I wished for and more. Not only did they do a great install, they even went the extra mile and tidied up my air ride install and sorted out a few other gremlins. Now that’s what you call service!

So where’s the audio? Well, the JL Audio C3-650 6.5-inch coaxial speakers are in the front doors, whilst the super-compact XD700/5v2 amp is neatly hidden up in a side compartment of the boot, along with the management system for the air lift.

The only visible non-OEM looking part of the build is the subtlety placed, 10-inch, TW3 subwoofer in the boot floor by the air tank. Underneath that (in the wheel well) is the sealed power-wedge box for the aforementioned sub and the VIAIR compressor – now just a faint murmur, thanks to lashings of Dynamat. Lovely!

So, most importantly, how does it sound? Well, amazing! The bass is punchier than Jeremy Clarkson after a bad day at the office. While the coaxial speakers effortlessly deliver crystal clear sounds. Pure audio bliss!

This is the first install I’ve had professionally fitted for some time and the difference in sound delivery is unbelievable compared to my recent efforts. Saj and the guys at SJ Concepts made sure everything was set up perfectly for the kind of music I listen to (Shania Twain, right? – Jules). I’m still astounded how so much sound can come from so little equipment. Amazing!
