pioneer champion series

This month’s top sub is the Pioneer Champion Series Sub

You can always count on the Japanese audio daddies at Pioneer to up the ante every time they re-launch one of their product ranges and the 2013 Champion Series subwoofers have been no exception. Designed using the latest materials to offer a substantial improvement on accuracy and response over the outgoing models, as always Pioneer have followed some infallible logic and stayed true to their roots – if you’re gonna say something, say it loud!

POWER HANDLING
There’s no shortage of fitment options for 2, 4 and 8 OHM systems because the range consists of no less than five new subs. For the 10-inchers we have the single voice coil TS-W260S4 and duel voice coil TS-W260D4 which will eat up a healthy 350-watts RMS each. They offer the same voice coil options with the 12-inch TS-W310S4 and TS-W310D4 models and upped the power handling to an impressive 400-watts. Pioneer have also chucked in a 300-watt ‘multi purpose’ 12-incher called the TS-W310 to finish off the range. This clever bit of kit can be used either in a conventional enclosure or as a ‘free-air’ woofer with no box at all. Handy to say the least!

TECH
The key to the improvements are embedded in the new design and materials. By reinforcing the seamless IMPP composite cone with Abaca fibre, Pioneer have not only managed to squeeze out louder bass but the revised cone structure results in increased accuracy too. To up reliability and durability they’ve redesigned the shape of the spider to make it super strong, while keeping everything distinctly light weight. Top-notch for all those who like to spank it!

LOOKS
Quality is top of the agenda right here and, for a measly 80 smackers or so, we think you get one of the best looking woofers on the market – they’ve certainly got the feel and build quality of much more expensive gear. The distinctive carbon pattern cones are designed to match their current GM-D range of amps, spot on for those Gok Wan fans who just have to co-ordinate their system. Lovely.
