To celebrate Ford’s racing success and motorsport pedigree, Ford Fair 2017 will host a dedicated display of Motorsport Heroes at Silverstone on June 6th
Here you can expect to find everything from current Time Attack contenders, ex-BTCC racers, rally cars, and even a few historic motorsport legends too! Most of these incredible machines will be on track during the dedicated Fastest Fords track sessions at 11:00am and 15:00pm too, so make sure you head trackside to witness this awesome spectacle as Ford’s finest motorsport machines all take to the legendary Silverstone circuit at the same time!
Fast Fords and motorsport have gone hand-in-hand for decades. In fact Henry Ford himself even competed behind the wheel of a car he designed back in 1901, beating the most accomplished racer of the time in a race that attracted enough attention from investors to fund the launch of Ford Motor Company in 1903! And Ford’s involvement with racing cars has never stopped since!
During the next 60-odd years Ford continued to win races and set records, but the link with proper motorsport really came of age in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Jim Clark claimed Ford’s first grand prix victory in the Lotus-Ford at the Dutch Grand Prix in 1967, while the rally stages were being dominated by sideways Escorts and Cortinas!
Progress on both the track and the rally stages continued through into the 1980s, culminating in the total domination of the legendary Sierra Cosworth RS500 in touring car championships all over the world. Meanwhile, the epic RS200 was never given the time to shine before the Group B championship was cancelled. Not to be put off Ford was soon back winning rallies with icons like the Escort Cosworth!
Things continued at the same pace through into the 2000s: Ford securing the services of the arguably the best rally driver of his era, Colin McRae, to pilot the all-new Focus WRC; while £2m per car, per season was being thrown at the BTCC, resulting in Alain Menu’s Championship success in 2000!
Since then Ford have continued to win trophies with the Focus and Fiesta built and run by M-Sport in the WRC, with the Focus BTCC cars prepared by Motorbase Performance, and winning Le Mans last year in the new Ford GT!
And of course, in addition to all of these, fast Fords have been racing – and winning! – at numerous national championships all over the world. And are continuing to do so to this day! So it’s about time we celebrated this achievement – head to the Motorsport Heroes display to see some of the fastest Fords at the entire show!
