VW Passat On Air
Shaz Begg’s modifiied VW Passat
Ever tried to explain to your parents why you’ve spent so much money on a car that was – to non-modders at least – perfectly good in the first place? It’s an uphill struggle and sometimes it can be easier to tell a little white lie rather than endure an ear bashing from the family, as Shaz Begg found out.
Three and a half years ago he decided it was time to pack in the modified scene and get something practical. With the tiny patter of a Shaz junior on the way he was on the lookout for a family friendly four-door. So when the opportunity to bag a diesel VW Passat at a bargain price came about he snapped it up and did the deal. For two years the Passat served Shaz and his new family well, but once a modder always a modder and as his mates started turning up in nice motors he decided it was time to get back in the game! After all, a set of rims can’t hurt… can they?!
As we all know though, wheels without coilovers is like curry without a beer, it just doesn’t have the right effect! The Passat got decked on a set of coilies, but still something was amiss! On a regular service trip to his local VW dealership Shaz spotted the Votex bodykit and couldn’t help himself… and as soon as it arrived the kit was fitted to the car. Oh, and the car got debadged and a subtle R36 spoiler was grafted onto the boot, too. Despite the kit and mods being pretty subtle, his family began to get suspicious – and there was no hiding that big chrome ECS Tuning grille.
Shaz soon became fed up with the constant rubbing and scraping that comes as part and parcel of a lowered car. After a trip to a show he realised the best solution would be air ride. Getting this past his family was going to be a real challenge though so he roped his mate Andy in to help conjure up a story. Andy was sent off to tell the family that Shaz had “broken down” and the car would be away for two weeks. In reality the car was shipped off to Voodoo Motorsport who fitted the Passat with an Accuair kit. Shaz did his best to hide the kit by having the tank and compressors fitted into the spare wheel well and covered with a Perspex window and leather trimmed cover.
Shortly after the freshly bagged VW returned, the game was up and his family rumbled him – but they loved it! So much so that the Passat is the favoured car for them to travel about in. With his family on side he took the opportunity to finish off the ride. A full retrim in double stitched and quilted Bentley leather means that everyone gets chauffeured around in true VIP style. He’s even had TV screens sunk into the headrests to keep them entertained on long journeys. He’s finished off the whole build with a set of 19-inch Image BPS rims with VW badges and Falken rubber.
Shaz has built the perfect car for not only himself but for his family as well. He’s happy, they’re happy, we’re happy, everyone’s happy!
