Alby Yuen’s modified Honda Civic Type R
According to the statistics, Glasgow is one of the most dangerous cities in the UK, but all is safe around Alby Yuen’s EP3 Civic. Maybe that’s down to the armoury this Type R is packing as he has plenty of power to get himself out of trouble on these riverside streets
“I come down here quite a lot with Monster Unit,” Alby told us. “It’s where we hang out as it’s pretty quiet at this time of night.” He has good reason to feel relaxed – with 326bhp on tap, not a lot will scare his Civic Most of that is down to the Rotrex Stage-1 Supercharger lurking under the bonnet; with a little help from the 650cc injectors, DC 4-2-1 manifold, Gruppe M air intake and Hondata K-Pro management.
Fortunately, this powerful set-up is matched by ample suspension and braking mods. The D2 coilovers and uprated discs and pads would be enough to satisfy most people but Alby also beefed up the anti-roll bar as well as adding strut braces, a camber kit, braided hoses and Dot 5.1 fluid. This provides go-kart tight handling and braking sharp enough to have him straining the Takata harness every time he slams on the anchors.
The beauty of this Monster Civic ain’t just under the skin, either – it’s also a fine looking ride mainly due to the carbon coating that contrasts perfectly with the Milano red paintwork. “I worked near Unique Automotive and was soon in there on a daily basis buying every carbon fibre item possible!” laughed Alby. This included a bonnet, tailgate, grille, rear spoiler, petrol cap and an ultra rare front splitter. Along with the 16-inch Rota GT3 rims, the carbon gives the Honda a real mean race car look.
This is further enhanced when you peer inside and find a completely stripped cabin with nothing but a single Corbeau Revolution bucket seat and a few gauges. Hell, there’s not even a talking computer! Clearly Alby takes this power to weight business seriously and that will be crucial when he takes on the Crail ¼ mile strip this year.
Overall, Alby has created a car more than worthy to be part of the Monster Unit stable. It’s the perfect machine for prowling the Glasgow streets, taking on Porsches and generally having a blast!
