The Top 10 FREE iPhone apps for Petrolheads
With more than fifty million iPhone or iPod Touch users and almost one hundred thousand Apps to choose from, it’s hardly surprising that downloads have topped two billion!
From the various categories, we’ve elected ten of our favourite; entirely free and developed specifically for us auto enthusiasts!

1. REAL RACING GTI – by Firemint
A racing simulator (sponsored by VW) introducing the new Golf GTI. This Lite version has just one track, but six cars, three game modes, an online leader board, Facebook/Twitter integration and the option to post replays directly to YouTube. Hugely addictive!
2. SOUNDLEVEL FREE – by Smudge Apps
Although the iPhone mic may not cut it as a pro’ db tool, this relatively accurate digital sound level meter is handy to quickly check that exhaust systems are silenced to road legal standards (or track day regulations). Yawn.
3. SPEEDOMETER – by DistinctDev
Find out how fast the bus, train or even plane is travelling with this
simple speedometer. It displays current, average and top speeds in either mph or kph using GPS. We’re not entirely sure how this is useful, but it’s entertaining.
4. GAS CUBBY LITE – by App Cubby
Save money and keep your motor operating at its peak with this fuel mileage and vehicle maintenance tracker. It charts MPG stats, fuel expenses, service data and more with support for multiple vehicles with customisable reminders.
5. AROUNDME – by Tweakersoft
How many times have you found yourself in desperate need of finding the closest fuel station, fast food restaurant or cash machine? This neat App will pin-point your exact whereabouts and conveniently direct you to the nearest one of each – and more.
6. USED CAR EXPERT – by AppCreatives.co.uk
Model-specific guides with fault finding checks, tips and recommendations for any used car buyer – and that’s got to be a good idea. It gives you access to the UsedCarExpert.co.uk database website, which is stuffed with easy-to-find info.
7. IHUDISPLAY LITE – by logiware gmbh
Simply place your iPhone close to the windshield and instantly create a mirrored head-up display; with floating time, direction and speed indications. It’s a brilliant idea for an App that works surprisingly well too – and hey, like everything else here, it’s free!
8. TRAPSTER – by Trapster.com
A great speed trap detection program with complete (and continually growing) camera database, animated alarms and voice warnings. It has optional push notifications than can alert you when the App isn’t running.
9. TRAFFIC INFO – by Steven Gurr
Using data from the Highways Agency, this App will highlight a list of motorways and major A-roads throughout the country with accidents or delays. Oh look, the whole M6 is knackered. Like I needed an iPhone to tell me that.
10. TAKE ME TO MY CAR – by Eldar Sadikov
Or perhaps ‘Take Scary To His Car’. Ever had that terrible feeling your car’s been stolen when in fact, you’d stupidly forgot where you’d parked? This App will navigate you back to it with exact position accuracy, directions and distance.
